Accurate Estimates without Calibration?

چکیده
Most process models calibrate their internal settings using historical data. Collecting such data collection is an expensive, tedious, and often incomplete process. Hence, we seek an alternative to calibration from historical data. Formally, historical data offers constraints to a set of model options. An alternative methods of generating those constraints is to augment a process model with a search engine (simulated annealing plus variable ranking) that finds options that improve the process model outputs. The improvements can be dramatic: in one of the studies in this paper, the search engine found process options that reduced the median and variance of the effort estimates by a factor of 20. In ten case studies, we show that the estimates generated in this manner can be quite accurate, despite being generated without using historical data.

Automatic and Full Calibration of Mobile Laser Scanning Systems
Mobile scanning, i.e., the practice of mounting laser scanners on moving platforms is an efficient way to acquire accurate and dense 3D point clouds of outdoor environments for urban and regional planning and architecture. The mobile scenario puts high requirements on the accuracy of the calibration of the measurement system, as small calibration inaccuracies lead to large errors in the resulti...
متن کاملStatistically accurate estimation of hormone concentrations and associated uncertainties: methodology, validation, and applications.
We describe a data reduction procedure to assign statistically accurate estimates of unknown hormone concentrations, with associated uncertainties, based on experimental uncertainties in sample replicates and the fitted calibration curve. Three mathematical calibration curve functions are considered. The one providing optimal statistical characterization of reference calibrators is chosen for u...
متن کاملTips and nodes are complementary not competing approaches to the calibration of molecular clocks
Molecular clock methodology provides the best means of establishing evolutionary timescales, the accuracy and precision of which remain reliant on calibration, traditionally based on fossil constraints on clade (node) ages. Tip calibration has been developed to obviate undesirable aspects of node calibration, including the need for maximum age constraints that are invariably very difficult to j...
متن کاملA Novel System-Level Calibration Method for Gimballed Platform IMU Using Optimal Estimation
An accurate calibration of inertial measurement unit errors is increasingly important as the inertial navigation system requirements become more stringent. Developing calibration methods that use as less as possible of IMU signals has 6-DOF gimballed IMU in space-stabilized mode is presented. It is considered as held stationary in the test location incorporating 15 di...
متن کاملCalibrating Area Estimate Bias on Categorical Maps Using the Contingency Table
This paper presents and compares approaches of estimating true area on the ground and calibrating quantitative errors of area estimate on categorical maps from the contingency table. Results directly estimated from the contingency table and those from two calibration methods were compared on two maps of 10 different land cover classes with known errors between them. The estimated true area perc...
